COMPLETED PROJECTS

SCOTTISH CANOE ASSOCIATION

Grandtully, Perthshire

2024

In late 2020, Eòlas Architects were commissioned to carry out a feasibility study for a masterplan project at the Scottish Canoe Association in Grandtully.

The study proposed a new education building, overnight camping facility, info point, bike service shelter and campervan service area, as well as the full refurbishment of the existing building and landscaping / parking for the wider site.

The new buildings and site opened in early 2024 and Eòlas Architects would like to extend congratulations to the client Paddle Scotland (formerly the Scottish Canoe Association) and the Grandtully Station Campsite.

Situated on the site of a former railway station, the design of the overnight facility takes inspiration from the historic railway signal box, and the education building from the open-closed form of a sit-in kayak. With the Rob Roy Way passing through, the site is an outdoor hub serving watersports on the adjacent River Tay. The development equips and enhances the canoe facility and campsite for years to come.

Six electric vehicle charging points were also provided, along with e-bike charging points, solar panels and air-source heat pumps. The project was partly funded by Visit Scotland, Sport Scotland, NatureScot and Inspiring Scotland. Working with Perth & Kinross Council Planning Authority and Building Standards, Eòlas Architects reduced the project’s carbon emissions by over 10% through installation and operation of these low and zero-carbon technologies.
